I know! I know! I’ve been neglecting my blog for awhile. [In fact, I just had to erase a whole section of this post because I started it way back in August and it referenced my summer activities. Since I’ve now had to scrape the frost off my car several times it was obviously no longer relevant. Oops!]
Anyway, for various (mostly lazy) reasons, I took an extended vacation from my blog. The good news is that it turns out that vacations are a key part of staying fit and healthy!
According to the April 2010 issue of Self (the gym’s magazine racks have pretty slim pickins in the way of recent magazines) there are several benefits to getting away from it all. First, going away on vacation helps reduce levels of cortisol, a stress hormone linked to excess belly fat. So…theoretically, you can decrease your waist circumference and lower your BMI simply by lying by the pool.
In addition, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reports that women who go on two excursions a year are nearly 8 time LESS likely to develop heart disease than those who stay home. If that isn’t a good excuse to use your accumulated miles and update your passport I don’t know what is.
